Fit a door lock
Change the mortise lock on a wooden door, or fit one new if you can use a chisel.
- Time
- About an hour; two for a new door
- Level
- Some skill
Before you start
Test the lock with the door open first, so nobody gets locked in.

In plain words
Steps
Measure the old lock
Measure the lock body: height, depth, and the door edge to the keyhole centre. Bring it to the counter and we match it.
Take the old lock out
Unscrew both handles, then the two screws on the door edge. Ease the body out of the slot.
Cut a new door
On a new door, mark the body on the edge about 1 m from the floor. Drill and chisel the slot to the depth of the body.
Fit the body
Slide the body in with the sloped side of the latch facing the way the door closes. Screw it to the door edge.
Handles and keyhole
Push the spindle through, fit the handle plates on both sides and screw them on. Check the key turns easily from each side.
Fit the striker
Close the door gently and mark where the latch and bolt meet the frame. Chisel a shallow recess and screw on the striker plate.
Test it open, then shut
With the door open, try every key from both sides. Then shut the door and try it again.
If the latch misses
A door that has dropped will not latch. Tighten the hinge screws, or change the hinges: 4″ SS butt hinges, three to a door.
